United States Attorney’s Office Joins NetDocuments … There’s No Law Firm That Big.
Today marks a special day: the Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA) has selected the NetDocuments cloud platform including document and email management for the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) with an initial roll out to 5,000 agency users.
At full deployment, NetDocuments will support 15,000 users. Expansive government agencies like USAO have enormous legal clout and thanks to technology-minded leadership and unparalleled government-specific security standards, cloud-based, FedRAMP Authorized platforms like NetDocuments are viable options.
As the chief prosecutor for the United States in criminal law cases, and representative of the United States in civil law cases as either the defendant or plaintiff, USAO is comprised of 94 federal districts encompassing the 50 states and four territories. As NetDocuments CEO Josh Baxter recently noted: “there is no law firm that big.”
According to the EOUSA selection committee, FedRAMP Authorization was an absolute requirement to proceed and ensure the security and integrity of USAO intellectual property and work product. The USAO identified a need for a secure, cloud-based, legal and workflow focused enterprise content management system and selected NetDocuments.
So, what are government agencies looking for in a FedRAMP Authorized cloud service provider (CSP) like NetDocuments?
First, government agencies are now able to deploy a leading cloud content management platform where government professionals do work, to organize content, improve efficiencies, increase productivity, accelerate collaboration with internal teams and external third-party stakeholders, and modernize workflows. Agency attorneys and users that have come from private practices and previously used NetDocuments are particularly pleased to have this platform as their ‘home base.’
From a government perspective, common yet critical features from a platform like NetDocuments include:
- Case centric organization.
- Search. Helping users evolve from “browsers to searchers.”
- Version control.
- Custom metadata field use.
- User centric experience.
Setting the Security Bar
When it comes to security, there’s typically a sizeable delta between every commercially available system and what the government requires. Enter the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). FedRAMP Authorization was established in 2011 as a way to ensure the security of CSPs used by the US Government. Federal agencies needed a way to trust using cloud services, as they constantly cited security as a prime reason for not using those services.
As announced this summer, NetDocuments is among the first purpose-built native cloud document management and content services vendors to be FedRAMP Authorized. This authorization allows government agencies to select and use a modern cloud-based document management service that provides the security and protection required for federal information. This conforms with FedRAMP’s mission to “promote the adoption of secure cloud services across the Federal Government by providing a standardized approach to security and risk assessment.”
According to Josh Baxter, USAO and other government agencies have unique and heightened security standards that only FedRAMP Authorized providers like NetDocuments can meet. “Our partnership with USAO and the government sector at large is a testament to our commitment to dependable innovation and our state-of-the-art security.
Security, once a roadblock to deploying cloud technologies, is now the calling card for modern cloud services like NetDocuments. While NetDocuments has always been cloud-first, cloud-only, and has taken a security-first approach, the ultimate proof-point of its FedRAMP Authorization has ushered in a new era for NetDocuments, specifically in the government domain.
